Landscape Protection and Habitat Restoration Across Indonesia

Protecting species, reforesting landscapes & working with communities.

Project Summary

Indonesia is home to some of the richest, most biodiverse rainforest on Earth, but it's disappearing fast, having lost close to a fifth of its tree cover since the year 2000 to palm oil, logging and agricultural expansion. We are in a race against time to protect critically endangered species and save this precious, and irreplaceable, habitat.

Landscape Protection & Habitat Restoration Across Indonsia

These surviving landscapes are frontline territory: some of the last places wild orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and Sunda pangolins can still be found, and home to indigenous communities, who depend on these forests for food, water and their way of life. That's why, with our local partner YIARI, we're working to protect and reforest five threatened landscapes and one vital stretch of coastline. Through patrols, monitoring, and restoration, done in collaboration with local communities, we're helping wildlife and people thrive together.

Explore each landscape below to see the difference your support makes.

Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park

This is one of the main release sites for YIARI’s rehabilitated orangutans due to its abundant food sources and suitable orangutan habitat.

Batutegi Protection Forest

Batutegi is a 60,000-hectare forest refuge in Sumatra and one of the last strongholds for the critically endangered Sumatran tiger and Sunda pangolin, but its shrinking core of intact forest is under threat.

Protecting Gunung Tarak Rainforest

This 24,000-hectare forest is one of the few places in Borneo still wild enough to sustain its own orangutan population, an estimated 280 individuals, and one of the highest densities recorded on the island.

Rich Biodiversity in Pematang Gadung

Orangutans, proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards, and hornbills can be found in this threatened forest. It has been chosen as a pioneering biodiversity project to generate sustainable income for the local community.

On Java’s remote western tip, Ujung Kulon National Park gives rehabilitated Javan slow lorises and long-tailed macaques a second life in the wild.

Mangrove Restoration

Where forest meets sea, mangroves are disappearing fast. Women-led teams are growing them back, seedling by seedling.

Your Support Can Make a Difference

Every one of these projects runs on the same thing: sustained, on-the-ground support. Explore the landscapes above to see how your donation could protect the next hectare of forest, fund the next orangutan release, or plant the next seedling.
