A Forest Full of Life
Since 2013, YIARI has identified a remarkable range of wildlife within Pematang Gadung Community Forest, including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards, and hornbills. Starting in 2014, census surveys, camera trapping, and phenology studies deepened that picture, recording 53 families and 93 genera of flora, alongside 141 bird species, 60 mammal species, 40 reptile species, and 11 amphibian species.
Listening to the Forest
Since 2024, YIARI has added bioacoustic technology to their monitoring toolkit, gathering data from 12 points across the forest. The results show 98 total identified species, a 4.9% increase compared to the previous year, including 13 new mammal species and 7 new reptile species picked up for the first time.
The Future: Biodiversity Credits
Over the coming years, baseline biodiversity data will be collected through patrols, camera traps and species surveys, helping to demonstrate the richness and ecological importance of this landscape. This data will support Plan Vivo in assessing the biodiversity value of the area and the long-term impact of the conservation work being carried out to protect it. Long-term this will deliver an income for the village communities around the forest.
