Project Summary

YIARI's Orangutan Protection Unit (OPU) takes a proactive approach to reducing conflict between people and orangutans, patrolling villages prone to conflict, running conservation outreach, and monitoring conflict sites before they escalate. The goal is simple: keep orangutans in their natural habitat and reduce the number that need rescuing at all.

The Full Story

Catching Conflict Before It Escalates

The OPU’s approach centres on identifying, verifying, and monitoring conflict and potential conflict sites — allowing the team to intervene early, before tension between people and orangutans turns into something more serious. In 2024 alone, 30 individual orangutans were verified and monitored across 19 villages.

Training and Outreach

Conflict mitigation training has been delivered to 55 partners, alongside conservation outreach reaching 200 villagers in areas with a history of potential conflict. This work is done in collaboration with BKSDA West Kalimantan, Gunung Palung National Park, and Yayasan Palung.

A Trend in the Right Direction

The number of conflicting villages has fallen from 21 to 19, part of a broader downward trend in conflicts and rescues seen over the past ten years — a sign that early intervention and community outreach are working.
