Your support goes further than habitat protection. It helps look after orangutans long after they’ve been released back into the wild – orangutans like Budi, now living freely in a protected forest, or Susi, who has gone on to have a baby in the wild. Many of our Guardians started out by adopting an orangutan and becoming a Guardian is a way to carry on supporting them, and others like them, once they’ve returned to the wild.
But protecting orangutans means protecting the whole forest they depend on and the people who live alongside it. Our partners, YIARI, protect more than 300,000 hectares of precious rainforest. Guardians help fund the breadth of that work. Projects like, The Power of Mama, an all-female fire-fighting team who patrol fire-prone forest, Reforestation & Treeplanting, to restore degraded habitat, and Alternative Livelihood Programmes, that give local communities sustainable ways to earn a living without relying on illegal logging, mining or hunting.
