Budi was rescued
Budi was rescued in December 2014 after spending the first year of his life confined to a tiny chicken cage and being fed only on condensed milk. This left him severely malnourished, anaemic, and so weak that he could not move his limbs. When Budi arrived at the rescue centre, he was in extreme pain, and video footage captured him screaming in agony with tears in his eyes as the vets worked to save his life. Thanks to the expertise and dedication of the team, Budi survived and made a remarkable recovery.
Learning to live in the wild
During his rehabilitation, Budi learned essential survival skills like climbing, foraging, socialising with other orangutans, and building nests. After years of preparation, in June 2023, Budi joined five other orangutans on an exciting journey to Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park, a protected area where more than 80 rehabilitated orangutans have been released.
A second chance
Budi's story is testament to the power of rescue and rehabilitation, proving that with the right care, even the most fragile individuals can be given a second chance.
Help protect Budi in the wild
Although Budi is back in the wild where he belongs, our work doesn't stop. We must protect the precious forest he lives in, home to many other critically endangered orangutans. Become a 'Guardian of the Forest' and join our community of monthly givers who are helping to save this species.
