Step Aside, Paddington and Aunt Lucy – Meet Real-Life Heroes at Our Retirement Home for Bears!

As excitement builds around the release of Paddington 3 on 8th November, International Animal Rescue Invites You to Discover the Heartwarming Stories of Rescued Bears in Their Golden Years.

International Animal Rescue and our partners Wildlife SOS are thrilled to share a real-life tale of “Aunt Lucy” magic at their bear sanctuary, the home to incredible, rescued bears now living out their golden years in peace and dignity. At this sanctuary, the expert veterinary staff and compassionate caregivers devote themselves to the health and happiness of bears who have been saved from lives of hardship.

One of the sanctuary’s shining stars is Odum the Sloth Bear, a survivor with a story of resilience and renewal. Rescued from the cruel practice of “dancing bears” in 2009, Odum’s journey from the streets of India to his sanctuary home has been marked by love and healing. Initially timid and malnourished, Odum has blossomed into a spirited bear who delights in foraging for ants and digging mud pits. With a sweet tooth for honey and peanut butter, Odum’s caregivers have even designed a custom “jungle gym” just his size and height, where he can enjoy his golden years in comfort.

Odum’s journey embodies the mission of IAR’s bear sanctuary, which is to provide a safe haven for bears who have faced unimaginable hardship, giving them the care and attention they need to live happy, active lives. As Odum grows older, the care team provides special dental check-ups, health supplements, and nutritious foods tailored to his needs—showing the same dedication you’d expect in any human retirement home.

Rescued in 2009 from a life of forced performances, Odum’s rescue was a collaboration between IAR, the Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Centre, Wildlife SOS, and Free the Bears as part of a mission to end the centuries-old tradition of “dancing bears” in India. Actress Julia Roberts, visiting the centre while filming in India, was so moved by Odum’s sweet spirit and resilience that she personally named him.

Now, Odum is a sanctuary favourite, beloved for his playful antics, and he receives all the care needed for a healthy and fulfilling life in his later years. His caregivers lovingly cater to his special dietary needs—especially his favourite hot porridge with honey and create enrichment activities that accommodate his size and quirks.

Odum’s story and those of other sanctuary bears offer a powerful reminder of the resilience of animals and the profound impact of compassion and rehabilitation.

Please adopt Odum today and support him through his golden years! https://www.internationalanimalrescue.org/projects/indian-sloth-bear/odum
