Supported by our partners, YIARI, the Mamas patrol the forest on motorbikes and on foot, identifying fire hotspots, talking to farmers about land clearing methods that don’t involve ‘slash and burn’, and ensuring their forests stay intact.
With over 120 members ranging from 26-62 years old, many are mothers, some are grandmothers. Most have overcome adversity, poverty and marginalisation. Their roles ensure they can safeguard their homes and have a powerful voice in their community.
“We are a group of mothers who take action to protect the forest around us. I play an active role in patrols to prevent forest and land fires, as well as speaking with local communities about how we can all play a part in improving the health, wellbeing and safety of our families and our entire community.Mrs Mai, The Power of Mama
“In addition to fire prevention, we also support communities impacted by flooding and provide education and resources to improve their quality of life. I hope the Power of Mama will grow and that we can inspire our children to share our passion for protecting the forest we call home.”
Help the Power of Mama grow
The Power of Mama is a new kind of conservation. It puts local women at the heart of protecting their forest, preventing fires before they start and changing farming practices from within the community. It’s a model that protects wildlife, strengthens families and gives women a powerful voice. But the Mamas can’t do it alone. Your support will help more women join the patrols, reach more farmers and keep the forest standing for the next generation.
