Last week, Francisco Sánchez Murillo, IAR Costa Rica’s Executive Veterinary Director, appeared on the national television programme Extra Noticias: Edición Estelar on Extra TV to discuss the natural miracle of leatherback turtle nesting in Costa Rica.
As the largest sea turtles in the world, leatherbacks travel thousands of miles to nest on Costa Rica’s shores between February and April. Fran, a leading wildlife expert, shared insights into this incredible phenomenon and provided guidance on responsible ecotourism practices to help protect these endangered creatures.
“This is an awe-inspiring event that reminds us of the importance of conservation,” Fran explained during the broadcast. “Every year, we witness thousands of turtles returning to these beaches, and it is crucial that we do our part to ensure their survival.”
Beyond his role as a spokesperson for conservation, Fran and the IAR Costa Rica team work tirelessly to protect the country’s wildlife. Their expertise extends from marine life to land animals, responding to emergencies, conducting research, and educating the public on ways to coexist with nature.
The media appearance is just one example of how IAR Costa Rica’s veterinarians juggle multiple responsibilities. Whether treating injured howler monkeys, rehabilitating sloths, or appearing on national television to raise awareness, the team remains committed to safeguarding Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity.
Well done, Fran. We are so grateful to have Fran and all of our worldwide International Animal Rescue Team, who are so passionate about wildlife and conservation.
