Problem
In Batutegi Protection Forest in Lampung, Sumatra, decades of chemical fertiliser use and an increasingly unpredictable climate left the soil depleted and coffee yields in decline.
Solution
With YIARI's support, the Sumber Makmur Farmers' Collective bought goats so that it can produce its own organic fertiliser from goat manure and farm waste, cutting reliance on expensive chemical alternatives. Farmers have also diversified their coffee plots into agroforestry, interplanting avocado, candlenut, and areca nut trees to improve soil health and diversify their income.
IMPACT
They have nearly quadrupled the number of tree seedlings they grow each year, from 1,000 to 3,500 and created steadier harvests so that the coffee farming that no longer needs to expand into the protected forest.
The farmland is now easy to work on and wild creatures are frequently spotted. We didn't used to see any, now thankfully we see them often.Srimiatun, Sumber Makmur Farmer
