SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

How education is breaking the cycle of poverty and supporting local conservation

“My dream is to become a doctor.”

Forest-edge children are the future of our landscape protection efforts in West Kalimantan, but many of them live so remotely they cannot access high school education.

The YIARI scholarship programme provides the most remote children from these communities with much-needed support, such as bikes or boarding fees, so nobody gets left behind.

One of our recipients, Bunga, tells us why the scholarship programme is so important to her:

“I am Bunga. I come from Nusa Poring village. My mother and father both work as farmers. My dream is to become a doctor. I wanted to become a doctor because I saw the situation and condition of my village.
“This scholarship really helped me in completing my education. If I didn’t get a scholarship from IAR, maybe my life wouldn’t be this good. I want to say a big thank you to all the people who participated in helping our development so far. ”

Break the Cycle of Poverty

The YIARI scholarship programme has now supported 50 young people from forest-edge communities through their education. By improving their life chances and opening up ways to make a living, away from illegal logging and hunting, it gives the forest a chance too.
