Odum, a young sloth bear, suffered for years as a “dancing bear.” His nose was punctured with a hot iron poker, and a rope was threaded through the raw wound to force him into agonising “dances.” Neglected and malnourished, Odum’s growth was stunted, and he developed an abnormal gait.
He was rescued in 2009 and began a new life at the Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Centre, where he was named “Odum” by actress, Julia Roberts, when she visited the sanctuary. Now, with the care of dedicated veterinarians, Odum enjoys playing and roaming freely, his painful past behind him. As he ages, Odum requires specialised geriatric care, including dental check-ups, physio and a vitamin enriched diet.
