The Problem
Across West Kalimantan, life on the edge of the rainforest has long forced hard choices. In villages near Pematang Gadung, years of chemical-dependent farming left much of the soil depleted and lowering yields. This pushed families toward illegal gold mining or logging just to get by.
Solution
Training farmers in organic techniques to bring exhausted soil back to life.
Impact
Rice yields rose from around 950kg to 2,800kg per harvest in just six months. The change has provided a livelihood for more than 30 households, and around half of these farmers were once active loggers who no longer need to rely on illegal activities to provide for their families. As a further benefit, these farmers now carry out daily patrols of their land, significantly reducing the risk of forest fires.
Help Local Communities
By working with local communities to improve their understanding of better farming techniques, we can prevent precious rainforest being destroyed.
