Problem
In Nusa Poring and Mawang Mentatai villages, local people growing vegetables to sell at nearby markets faced long queues and high costs to use the boats that carried their produce, and the wait was often long enough for the vegetables to wilt and lose their value.
Solution
YIARI's fix was simple: a boat of their own. Available to the community whenever they need it, complete with a driver so that local people didn’t have to queue or pay steep rental fees, just a small usage fee that goes straight back into the community and boat driver.
Impact
Within six months, the community had already earned back the full cost of the boat, and it now supports over 140 farmers every month who can sell their produce profitably.
Help Communities Thrive
Holistic conservation is about understanding that poverty is often the root of a lot of human activity that encroaches on the rainforest. Working with local communities to help find practical solutions for sustainable livelihoods helps animals and people thrive, together.
