Bad and good news from Costa Rica

Little Fulek loses his fight for life

A tiny white-tailed deer that our team in Costa Rica rescued recently has sadly passed away. The little creature, named Fulek, was found alone on a construction site, with no sign of his mother. Upon arrival at our rescue center, Fulek was given special nutrition to try to kickstart his recovery. However, despite bearing no signs of physical injuries, it seems that this beautiful baby could not cope with the trauma of being separated from his mother and died.

Sadly, all too often this is the harsh reality of wildlife rescue. IAR’s veterinary teams and caregivers work tirelessly to give every animal in need a second chance but they are also faced with numerous challenges, particularly when very young animals are without their mother’s care and protection.

Freedom once more for four howler monkeys

Earlier in February, four howler monkeys were returned to freedom in the forest. Having been deemed ready for release by the vets and caregivers at IAR’s center in Nosara, they were moved to a habituation enclosure in the forest to give them time to adjust to their new surroundings. Then, once monitoring had confirmed that they were comfortable in their new environment, the top hatch was opened, and the little troop climbed out eagerly into the trees.

Indira, Abba, Mechas and Chema had all experienced terrible trauma: Abba and Mechas were both victims of electrocution, Chema had been attacked by another animal and little Indira was found alone without her mother. All four had undergone an intensive rehabilitation process to prepare them for life back in the forest.
