Baby howler monkey, Estrellita, rescued from dead mother's arms

In a heart-wrenching incident, Estrellita, a young howler monkey, had to be pulled from the arms of her deceased mother, Mama Maria, after she was tragically electrocuted by uninsulated power cables in Costa Rica. Despite facing severe burns, Estrellita miraculously survived, but her journey to recovery remains uncertain.

The distressing scene unfolded as Mama Maria, navigating through fragmented habitat, unknowingly encountered the lethal power cables, mistaking them for tree branches. Clinging to her mother’s back, Estrellita suffered burns during the electrocution, leaving her in need of extensive rehabilitation.

This tragic incident sheds light on the harsh reality confronted daily by the team in Costa Rica, who tirelessly strive to mitigate the impact of urbanization on the local wildlife. Every year we receive hundreds of injured animals, underscoring the urgent need for conservation efforts.

Despite the challenges, the we remain resolute in our mission. Through our initiatives such as the “Stop the Shocks”, we are collaborating with local authorities and electricity providers to insulate power lines, trim trees, and establish safe crossings, thereby safeguarding wildlife from electrocutions. It’s an ongoing process and
