Intro

2023 was a year of relentless challenges and despite the unwavering support from our incredible supporters we find ourselves facing a shortfall that threatens our operations. For the last few years, the COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on our projects around the globe, followed by the relentless rise in the cost of living and inflation has left us struggling to keep pace.

We urgently need to bridge this shortfall gap to ensure that our operations can continue uninterrupted. We’re reaching out with an urgent plea because we quite simply can’t do our work without you.

Please consider donating what you can today; we can’t do this without you!

How might a shortfall affect our projects?

Every aspect of our work requires substantial resources and without these funds, it’s all at risk. From rescuing poor animals in dire need of help, and providing them with the care they need for rehabilitation. To educational and conservation work which protects their natural habitats and empowering local communities to help drive lasting change.

  • Slow Loris Protection

Our work in Indonesia with the gentle slow loris was at full tilt in 2023. Over the past decade we have made great strides to tackle the illegal trade of these wonderful creatures, both in markets and online. Your generosity has been crucial in supporting our initiatives, from rescuing lorises with clipped teeth to conducting vital research for their rehabilitation and reintroduction. Now, we turn to you, our dedicated supporters, to help bridge this dangerous shortfall.

We have so many animals in our care that our relying on us to provide for them. Such as poor Kobong who was rescued after being electrocuted. He was very lucky to survive but did not come through unscathed. Unfortunately, due to the severity of his injuries and necrosis setting it, we had to amputate his right leg and arm and remove one of his eyes. The fact he made it through at all is a testament to his strength and determination to live! Due to his injuries Kobong can never be released back into the wild, but as long as we are operating, he has a home for life. With continued shortfalls, that home for life is in jeopardy.

Please, donate today and be a beacon of hope for the slow loris. Together, we can safeguard their existence and protect them from the threats that loom large. Time is of the essence, and your support makes all the difference.

  • Orangutan Protection

Alongside the BKSDA, our partners YIARI have transformed the lives of countless orangutans since the project began in 2009. The project supports the rescue, rehabilitation and release of this vulnerable species. The transformative impact of the orangutan project may be priceless, but your donations to our Shortfall Appeal our vital keeping it going strong.

Last year an incredible day took place, this was when a group of orangutans, one of which was called Budi, were reintroduced to the wild by the BKSDA and our partners YIARI. Releases are incredibly expensive, in fact they cost more than $40,000 per expedition! This time we were able to fund our partners in doing so, but as we look to the future, we’re concerned about what a lack of funds could mean for orangutan releases. There are still more than 60 orangutans in YIARI’s center. Many of which can one day follow in Budi’s footsteps and live the rest of their lives where they belong- in the wild!

Please donate today so they can all get the same happy ending like Budi!

  • Costa Rica

The consequences of urban development have been devastating for local wildlife in Costa Rica. Every year, hundreds of animals arrive at our rescue center after falling victim to the hazards of uninsulated power cables and the perils associated with rapidly expanding urban areas. Each rescue operation, each medical treatment, and every rehabilitation process is a costly endeavor, yet absolutely essential to give these animals a fighting chance.

To continue our vital work, we are in dire need of raising £66,036. This amount is crucial to sustain our operations and ensure that no animal in need is turned away. With your support, we can bridge this gap and continue to be a haven for these vulnerable creatures. We must stress that our work will continue regardless, but if we cannot raise the extra funds needed then it will make it far more challenging to reach EVERY animal that needs our help!

  • Armenian Bears

In Armenia, we have over 30 bears in our care and many more in need of rescue. The funds we desperately need are crucial for providing those rescues, dental surgeries, rehabilitation, and eventual release back into the wild. In 2023 we took in two bear cubs, Sam and Lexi, both found alone in the wild without their mothers who no doubt had become victims of poachers. Sam and Lexi need years of rehabilitation before they can hopefully be released back into the wild, but that future is in serious risk if a shortfall continues.

Last year we also rescued a bear called Misha; she was found in the wild but had quite clearly escaped from captivity. When the vets inspected her, they found her teeth were ground down to their roots – she must have been in constant pain. We have seen this many times in bears we’ve rescued from captivity and it occurs due to the bear constantly chewing on the bars of their cage. Imagine the mind-numbing boredom you’d have to endure to put yourself through this much pain, we can’t bear to think about it.

Misha is in desperate need of dental surgery to ease her pain but this is at risk if we can’t address our shortfall. If you can help us bridge this gap in our fundraising, please donate today!

  • IARconserves

Through the IARconserves program, in which our partners YIARI work with communities and embrace grassroots strategies, both the biodiversity of the forests and people in isolated communities thrived, as environmental impact was minimized. Last year had the lowest animal rescue numbers in over a decade! This isn’t a sign of failure, this is a sign of success as issues were fixed at the source before a rescue is needed.

    • 44,720 seedlings were planted, representing a variety of trees. They’ll eventually evolve into habitats for animals, might offer some food, and also help soak up carbon.
    • The Power of Mama grew to 96 women, working hard to protect the forest by firefighting, whilst also empowering communities and creating positive change.
    •  Illiteracy is being eradicated with nearly 200 children enrolled on education programs. This paves the way for a brighter future, with alternative careers to logging and poaching.
    • There was a decrease in illegal mining by 88%, leaving animal and plant species alone!

Now imagine if none of that happened due to a lack of funding? We dread to think about this becoming a reality. So please, make a donation today to ensure this work doesn’t come to an end!

  • Indian Sloth Bears

Along with our partners Wildlife SOS, we have worked tirelessly to rescue and rehabilitate these bears, who endured unimaginable cruelty for centuries. Last year, you came to our support to raise funds for the geriatric dancing bears. However, caring for EVERY bear, young and old, is a massive financial challenge, and truthfully; we’re falling short. Every rescued bear deserves a life filled with love and comfort, and we are DETERMINED to provide this.

The care provided at the sanctuaries is not just about food and shelter; it’s about creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat, with trees, pools, and activities to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Regular medical and dental checks are crucial to ensure they live their lives free from pain and fear.

Last year presented an economic climate that was VERY tough to fundraise in, and we need to cover the shortage in funds to continue the care these bears DESERVE!

We are committed to providing these bears with best care possible, but we truly cannot do it without you.
