World Orangutan Day Open Day at IAR's Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo

20th August 2014

World Orangutan Day is held on August 19th every year. The aim of World Orangutan Day is to encourage the public to take action in preserving this endangered species.

At our Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Ketapang, West Borneo, we held an open day to raise awareness of the threats towards the orangutan and promote the need for conservation. We held lectures for the public covering a range of conservation issues and also explained the Conservation Act and the reporting process to the audience. We held a brief tour of the centre with talks on the work that we do with our orangutans and the rehabilitation process.

We also held fun quizzes and competitions for the public, such as drawing competitions for school children.

The day was a resounding success, with participants showing a keen interest in finding out more about the orangutan and ways to help protect the future of this iconic species and its dwindling habitat.
