Precious orphans saved – and surviving without their mothers

27th March 2014

This Mothering Sunday, we’re sharing the stories of the many orangutan orphans we have rescued in the last year. Tragically, for almost every one of them, a mother will have died. No female orangutan abandons her baby simply because she is frightened. Indeed, she will give up her life sooner than give up her infant and that is probably what she did.

So this Mother’s Day we are celebrating the lives of these beautiful babies and the expert, loving care they receive from the team at our centre in Ketapang. By caring for these orphans and preparing them for life back in the wild, we’re ensuring that these courageous females did not live or die in vain. Their legacy lives on in their precious children.

Ael, Santa and Kaliba have already been released into protected areas of forest far frohuman habitation where they can live free from harm.

The infants and babies have joined others at our Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Ketapang, West Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo.) They are learning from their human ‘babysitters’ – and from each other – all the skills they will need to survive in the wild.

The very young babies will be with us for a number of years until they have developed the strength and the vital skills they will need to fend for themselves.

You can adopt an orphaned orangutan and help us provide him with all the love and care he needs on his long journey back to the wild. Or if you prefer, you can make a donation here.

You can also text: ORAN14 £5 to 70070 to simply donate £5.
