Orangutan Caring Week celebrations at our orangutan rescue centre in Borneo

19th November 2018

In commemoration and celebration of ‘Orangutan Caring Week’ ( 11-17 November), our team in Indonesia, in collaboration with the ‘Pongo Ranger’ Community, held a community gathering and ‘conservation debate’ competition for the local schools, young people and community.

The event was held on the 17th to the 18th of November, with the debate focusing on valuing orangutans over profits.

For the first time, members of the public were invited to the debate, with the hopes that it would increase awareness about current environmental problems, especially amongst younger people as they are the future leaders of their communities.

Another aim of the meeting was to develop recommendations on how the community can conserve the environment, including the forests around them.

There were other activities running at our Learning Centre, welcoming nature lovers throughout the Ketapang District. Participants received knowledge about environmental protection, delivered by the West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Regional Conservation Section (SKW) and Ketapang and Gunung Palung National Park Hall. These special events were held in the hopes of inspiring the local community to have a more pro-active approach towards the environmental issues that exist in Indonesia, especially in the Ketapang District.
