IAR and Nature Trust venture

12th February 2002

Following a meeting with the Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment, Minister Dr George Pullicino met with all the environmental groups in Malta to discuss the problems that the local environment is facing. On advice from the Minister, IAR and Nature Trust joined forces to set up the Voluntary Ecological Group. Both groups will be co-operating with the Ministry for the Environment to set up this voluntary warden service to protect the Maltese countryside.

The voluntary wardens will work hand in hand with the police and the ministry. Both groups have already had talks to explore how the service will operate and they intend to start the voluntary service during this coming September. The aim is to protect the countryside and, at the same time, to educate local people. The wardens’ physical presence will act as a deterrent but any persistent lawbreakers will be reported to the police.
