Amazing Art Exhibition in Australia aims to raise funds for IAR’s orangutan centre in Ketapang

19th November 2014

Project Orangutan – The Exhibition is a Fundraising Art Exhibition featuring artists from all over Australia to raise awareness of the plight of orangutans and their habitat and to raise funding for IAR’s Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Ketapang, Indonesian Borneo.

The exhibition will showcase a collection of artworks created by Australian artists. Each artist has been paired with one of the orangutans currently in the care of our centre, creating a body of work that expresses the unique personalities and idiosyncrasies of these beautiful primates reflected through the artists’ eyes. Each piece has been donated by the artist to sell at one of the two shows to raise money for IAR’s work rescuing and rehabilitating orangutans in West Borneo. Nothing of its kind has been attempted previously and pairing the creativity of each artist to the personality and nature of each orangutan has resulted in striking portraits reflecting each subject’s individual character and demeanour.

The 70 artists contributing to the exhibition include Peter Browne, Lisa Roet, Nathan Ferlazzo, Carlos Barrios, Karen Hull and Wendy Sharpe, to name but a few!

Project organiser and passionate orangutan enthusiast Jessica Warwick had the following to say about the exhibition: “Orangutans face many adversities. I hope this exhibition is an innovative way both to raise funds and highlight some of the reasons why we have to fight so hard to keep the species from extinction. Each artwork will be accompanied by the orangutan’s story so you can learn the reason why that particular orangutan is at the IAR rehabilitation centre.”

Alan Knight , IAR CEO, said: “We can’t thank Jessica Warwick enough for organising this exhibition.  I have had a sneak preview of a couple of the pieces and they are just incredible. The quality is superb. We are extremely grateful to Jess, the artists and to everyone else who has played a part in putting this project together. Now we just need members of the public to attend the two exhibitions and purchase the beautiful portraits the artists have created. It is an opportunity to buy some extraordinary artwork in support of a very worthy cause – what could be better!”

The exhibition is partnered with some of the foremost orangutan organisations in the world – International Animal Rescue, BOS, TOP, REDAPES, POI, Project Orangutan and The Great Projects.
