Our partners in Armenia have alerted us to a bear in truly terrible conditions. Nelson is one of the saddest bears we have ever seen. He has spent 30 long years living in this horrendous cage.
His owner refuses to give him up, claiming that he loves the bear. But loving an animal means looking after it, feeding and caring for it, not neglecting it and leaving it for days without food. You can clearly see the compacted dirt in his cage where he spent years going round and round to stave off his boredom and frustration. And, worse still, the poor animal has gone blind.

The Armenian government must step in and order the man to give the bear up. With our partners, we’re putting as much pressure as we can on the government to force the man to surrender his bear to us. Then we will act immediately to rescue and care for him.
What this bear needs right now are not empty words of love but treatment and care to relieve his pain and veterinary attention to establish whether he might ever see again. He is an elderly bear in poor health and so we will need to take extra special care during the rescue operation. We will have specialist vets on hand to monitor him when the anaesthetic is administered and throughout the rescue process. As soon as he is under anaesthetic, we will be able to give him an initial health assessment and get some idea of the condition he is in. Then he will be rushed to our rescue centre in the mountains where he will be put in quarantine and tests will be carried out to get a full picture of his health.
