Body

The COVID-19 crisis in India is spiralling out of control, as the second wave sweeps the country. The impact is devastating and the bear sanctuaries have not escaped the crisis - some of the dedicated animal care team are sick and all transport system are disrupted, causing issues with food and medical supplies. We are raising emergency funds to help keep our Indian sanctuaries safe, and to make sure there are enough vital supplies to get us through the next few months.

We are in desperate need of funds for:

  • three to four oxygen concentrators and around 10 oxygen cylinders as critical care for the staff, some on whom have tested positive for COVID-19.
  • medicine and food supplies to last the next few months, so we can manage during the impending lockdowns.
  • PPE supplies, from kits to masks, to keep the staff safe whilst they continue to care for the bears at our sanctuaries.

We have very little time to arrange everything as several places in India are now going into lockdown and getting supplies is becoming more and more difficult. Your support is vital to the welfare of the rescued bears and the physical and mental wellbeing of those who care for them. We’d be incredibly grateful for your donations, to help our bear sanctuaries at such a desperate time.

A Message From Kartick

At the bear rescue centres in Agra and Bangalore, we’re facing a lot of problems on the ground.

Our dedicated and committed staff are doing their best to work courageously, but several staff members have tested positive for Covid-19. We’ve had to quarantine them for their own safety and also to prevent exposure to other staff and the animals. We desperately need 3 or 4 oxygen concentrators and about 10 oxygen cylinders as critical care for our staff. Doctors have advised us to be prepared for a medical crisis without this equipment.

With the severe shortage of these items, the costs have skyrocketed in the last few days with concentrators costing around USD$ 5000 each. We have very little time to arrange everything as several states across India are going into lockdown and getting supplies will get more and more difficult with each passing day.

We already have a strict curfew and lockdown imposed in Delhi. We are having to use animal ambulances to move critical medicines and food supplies for the animals at the bear rescue centres. After seeing what happened last year with the first Covid wave blocking all supply chains and skyrocketing prices of food and medicines for the animals, we want to avoid a repeat of the same.

IAR’s supporters have always been there to support us with the care of the rescued bears. Can you please help us to raise the funds needed to buy and store food and medicines for the bears and also procure the oxygen concentrators and Covid safety equipment including PPE kits and masks for our staff to keep them safe?

I am extremely worried by the current situation and would deeply appreciate your help.
