Malta

Our office in Malta is based at the home of Malta chairman, Max Farrugia, in Hamrun. This is also the location of our small bird rehabilitation hospital where all kinds of migrating birds are treated for shooting injuries before being released back into the wild.

On our 24 hour emergency helpline we take enquiries about abandoned and stray animals, illegal bird hunting and trapping, wildlife being sold or kept as pets, and instances of animal cruelty. Callers are given advice or provided with contact details for others who can help. We take action on some cases ourselves, or call in the police to investigate. International Animal Rescue works very closely with the police and the Ministry of Environment and Rural Affairs in Malta to help animals in need.

We campaign at a national and a European level for improvements to animal welfare legislation. Since Malta became a member of the European Union in 2004, a number of European groups have asked us to be their partners in Malta. Max represents International Animal Rescue on the European Committee for PIE (Pets in Europe) and ENDCAP (to end wildlife in captivity). Within PIE he holds the Vice-Presidency of the council and is also chairman of ENDCAP's Exotic Trade and Illegal Traffic of Wildlife Committee.
