Indonesia

Widespread destruction of the rainforest and the illegal trade in primates in Indonesia inflicts terrible suffering on animals that are caught from the wild to be killed for bushmeat or sold as pets. It also poses the threat of extinction to some endangered species. International Animal Rescue runs a rehabilitation centre for orangutans in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, and a centre for macaques and slow lorises in Java where these primates are prepared for release back into protected areas in the wild.

Rescued infant orangutan KarmilaThe illegal trade in primates in Indonesia inflicts terrible suffering on animals that are caught from the wild and sold as pets in the animal markets. It also poses the threat of extinction to endangered species like the slow loris.

Orangutan emergency centre

Our team is caring for a growing number of orangutans in a small, temporary rescue centre in Ketapang, West Kalimantan while we work to establish a more permanent facility. Until International Animal Rescue became involved there was no adequate centre for rescued orangutans in the area. The priority was to set up a temporary facility where they could be given immediate care and emergency veterinary treatment.

Orangutan rehabilitation centre

Building work on the new centre is scheduled to begin in November 2011. It will cater for up to 100 orangutans at a time and facilities will include large quarantine pens for new arrivals; a fully-equipped veterinary clinic; an education centre; indoor accommodation and an outdoor play area for babies and infants and spacious forested enclosures where orangutans can develop the skills and natural behaviour they will need to fend for themselves in the wild.

Ciapus primate centre

Our primate rescue centre is set in the beautiful rainforest of Ciapus, near Bogor, on the island of Java. It is about three hours' drive from Jakarta. Our team focuses on the rehabilitation and release of the endangered slow loris and long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques. We believe our facility to be the only one of its kind in Indonesia.
