About Cocobolo Troop
Cocobolo Troop is composed of six howler monkeys; four females named Nirvana, Nury, Brava and Tama, and two males named Kurt and Oriol. All six howlers arrived in our care under horrible circumstances but they have begun to recover and are already showing great progress. They are the youngest troop in our care and are at the beginning of their rehabilitation process.

Cocobolo Troop's Story
Nirvana arrived in October 2022, weighing a mere 305 grams. Brava and Kurt, both survivors of unfortunate car accidents, have been steadily progressing on their paths to recovery. Brava, aptly named for her spirited nature (Brava means ‘angry’ in Costa Rican Spanish), joined the troop in November 2022. From her initial wild and angry demeanor, she has evolved into a more serene individual, now weighing a robust 1.7 kilograms. Kurt, who arrived in January 2023 at 769 grams, has grown into a magnificent 2-kilogram male. His commanding presence has earned him the role of alpha male within the troop.
The stories of Nury, Oriol, and Tama reflect the challenges these monkeys face in their natural environment. Tragic electrocutions left them orphaned and in need of our care. Tama’s arrived in October 2022, followed by Nury in December 2022 and Oriol in January 2023. Their journeys will involve careful medical attention and ongoing check-ups to address any potential long-term effects stemming from their past traumas.
