Peggy Update - Summer 2013

1st September 2013

Peggy remains a joy to have at the centre. No one can be down in the dumps for long with her around. Although she is well past her puppy dog days, she is still full of boundless energy and enthusiasm. She is also a real busybody and loves to be at the centre of things.

When the team at the Animal Tracks Centre began preparing for their part in Mission Rabies - an ambitious project involving a number of groups working together to vaccinate 50,000 dogs in 30 days - Peggy could hardly contain her excitement. The centre is busy at the best of times, but the heightened level of activity and bustle sent Peggy into a complete spin. She couldn’t make up her mind whether to stay indoors with the vets while they checked off and packed up mountains of vaccinations, syringes and other vital supplies, or stay outside with the keepers while they loaded all the equipment for the mission into the trucks – dog catching nets and cage traps, food to tempt the most wary dogs and plenty of IAR collars and blue spray to identify the dogs that have been treated.

In spite of her disability, Peggy sprang onto the wall at the entrance of Animal Tracks and used her vantage point to survey all the comings and goings. Every now and again her excitement would get the better of her and she’d be off round the centre at a gallop with her friends, leading the pack in spite of her missing leg and veering round the corners at breathtaking speed.

It was all the team could do to prevent Peggy leaping into the vehicle and joining them when they set off early every morning. But, although she was dejected at being left behind, her disappointment was soon forgotten. And when the team returned each evening, Peggy would be there to greet them with her smiley face and her wagging tail. Who could not love a dog with such a happy disposition and such a warm heart!

Thank you for helping us care for Peggy.
