US ambassador looks to curb poaching in Cameroon

Fri 15 August 2008 14:00 UK — Africa,Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos

Picture for article The US ambassador to Cameroon has warned that wildlife in the south-east of the country is being put under threat by rampant poaching.

Ambassador Janet Garvey visited the south-east of the west African country recently and told the africanews.com website that she was deeply concerned about poaching in the area.

She explained that the region is home to a number of important and rare species, including elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees.

However, Ms Garvey told the website that "poaching is a serious problem".

"I think it is worrying as it appears to be getting worse. Not only are [there more] poachers … but they are better armed and more willing to engage in violent activities.

"It is something that really needs to be looked into, to give the game rangers and others the capabilities to fight against the poachers."

The US ambassador added that one way to reduce poaching might be to try and cut poverty levels in the area.

"You cannot expect people to change their behaviour if they are not able to feed and send their children to school or have a better life," she explained.

Recently, a woman who set up an illegal business smuggling raw elephant ivory from Cameroon to the US and Canada was sentenced to five years in prison.
