Rare white-bellied sea eagle dies in the Philippines
Thu 14 August 2008 14:00 UK — Asia,Birds
Officials from the Philippines have confirmed that a rare white-bellied sea eagle has died despite efforts to save it.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the endangered white-bellied sea eagle was found on Friday (August 8th) after it was shot in the wing in the western Bataan province.
Despite efforts by local vets to save the bird, it died on Monday.
Wildlife officer Mila Ramirez explained to the AP: "The injured bird uttered a loud cry as its body and wings were touched by rescuers.
"You can imagine how much cruelty this bird had to endure just so some irresponsible people could have their day."
This is the second rare bird to be shot by hunters in the Philippines in a month and environment secretary Lito Atienza said that officers were currently trying to track down the culprits.
Last month, a 22-year-old tribal farmer admitted killing a rare Philippine eagle in a national park in southern Bukidnon province. He said that he had mistakenly believed that it was a hawk.
