Fri 15 August 2008 14:00 UK — Africa,Other
Reports suggest that a government minister from Namibia has been accused of illegally poaching animals.
According to local newspaper The Namibian, Bartholomeus Shangheta - a regional councillor for Otavi constituency - has been implicated in a recent poaching incident in the north of the country.
It is believed that Mr Shangheta was apprehended by a local farmer over the weekend and the police were called.
Otavi police station commander Petrus Shipepe told the newspaper that the politician had already appeared in Grootfontein magistrate's court. However, he failed to give any information about which animals Mr Shangheta is accused of illegally killing.
Recently, the Indian state of Maharashtra has been rocked by a poaching scandal involving its former minister of state for transport and tribal development.
Dharmarao Atram has been implicated in an incident where several endangered deer were illegally killed. However, it was recently suggested that the former minister was likely to avoid questioning about the incident.
