Infamous Indian poacher arrested

Wed 13 August 2008 17:00 UK — Asia,Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos

Picture for article A major wildlife poacher is believed to have been arrested in India, nearly three years after he dramatically escaped from authorities.

The local Calcutta Telegraph reported that Gopal Boro was detained late in July after a property in Morigaon was raided by a joint team of forest officers and army personnel.

In 2005, the poacher made headlines in India after he escaped unhurt from a gunfight with forest rangers in the Orang National Park. During the pitched battle, one member of Boro's rhino poaching gang was killed and another was arrested.

However, the poacher escaped and it is believed that he has been behind a rise in rhino killings in recent months.

The newspaper reported that four of the animals have been killed in the national park in Assam since the beginning of the year.

Divisional forest officer S Momin told the publication that "Boro had been a menace and his arrest will bring us some relief".

The arrests came as authorities looked to control poaching in the area, after it soared in response to extended protection in the nearby Kaziranga National Park.

Recently, it was reported that the Indian army had been drafted in to try to curb poaching in the state of Assam.
