India makes cash available to save tigers

Mon 18 August 2008 14:00 UK — Asia,Big Cats

Picture for article In a bid to save the country's tiger population, authorities in India have revealed they have made cash available to encourage people to move away from areas that tigers inhabit.

The Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had released 520 million rupees (£650,000) that will be used to encourage families to leave areas that tigers live in.

It is thought that each family that agrees to move could receive one million rupees.

In particular, authorities are keen to completely clear two villages from inside Sariska Park near New Delhi. It was here that, in 2006, an entire population of 19 tigers was found killed.

An NTCA spokesman explained to the news agency that the scheme was designed to create "inviolate areas for the big cats as well as for other wildlife".

"This will help decrease man-animals conflict and create inviolate zones for tigers," he added.

However, local conservationists said that one of the major problems with efforts to protect tigers was that many game warden posts remained unfilled.

Some experts believe that there could be as few as 2,500 tigers left in the wild across the globe.
