Alligator poacher sentenced in the US

Tue 19 August 2008 14:00 UK — North America,Reptiles

Picture for article A man caught poaching a baby American alligator in Florida has been sentenced to probation and ordered not to hunt or fish for 2.5 years.

The local naplesnews.com website reported that 24-year-old Manuel Dominic Gonzalez pleaded 'no contest' to poaching alligators and was sentenced to 30 months of state probation.

On April 26th, Mr Gonzalez and Francisco Ayala Perez were arrested by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Marc Shea.

They were caught when the officer carried out a routine inspection while the pair were fishing. They initially claimed they had not yet caught anything, but the officer noted that they were nervous and repeatedly glanced at the back of their pick-up truck.

Further investigation uncovered a recently-dead alligator, which authorities believe was killed by a machete.

According to the website, it is illegal to kill alligators outside of a set time period.

Although American alligators were considered in danger of becoming extinct 30 years ago, successful conservation efforts have helped them recover.

Despite this, authorities still closely monitor and protect the reptiles.

Help IAR rescue and rehabilitate endangered wildlife.
