Officials try to crack illegal dog meat trade in the Philippines
Mon 28 July 2008 13:45 UK — Asia,Domestic Animals
Officials from the Philippines have arrested six men as part of their crackdown on the illegal trade of dog meat.
The local gmanews.tv website reported that a joint team featuring officers from the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) and the police force swooped on the men in the northern Baguio City.
When arrested in the public market, the men were found to be carrying 258 kilograms of dog meat and 20 already 'dressed' dogs.
One of the officers, Brando Gegway, explained that these were the first arrests that had used new anti-rabies laws to the illegal sale of dog meat.
He said the new rules - known as RA 9482 - had stricter penalties and so could prove to be a more effective deterrent.
"Compared to the animal welfare law or RA 8485, this new law imposes stiffer penalties under Section 11 that states that all person found guilty of trading dog meat will be fined P5,000 (£57) per dog and imprisoned for one to four years," he said.
Four Vietnamese fishermen were recently arrested for poaching in Philippine waters. Local papers reported at the time that the men were part of a larger fleet that was attempting to take fish illegally.
