New spider found in Australia

Thu 29 May 2008 12:04 UK — Australasia,Other

Picture for article Australian researchers have reported that they have discovered a new species of spider on the west coast of the country.

What's more, the local ABC News station said that the team also found a population of assassin spiders. These arachnids were thought to be extinct in the country.

Mark Harvey from the Western Australian Museum explained that the spiders were found at several sites along a 70 kilometre stretch of coastline near Albany.

He told the website: "We hadn't seen that species for about 25 years, so to find them quite happy in their habitat on the south coast was quite a boon for us."

It is believed that assassin spiders are around 150 million years old and that they are currently in danger of extinction across the world.

The newly discovered species of spider has not yet been named and is just four millimetres long.

Assassin spiders are extremely unusual, as they possess necks that are nearly as long as their bodies. They also boast extremely large fangs for their size.
