Foreigners detained in Russia over poaching allegations
Fri 23 May 2008 14:00 UK — Europe,Marine Wildlife
Russian officials have accused three foreign nationals of poaching millions of pounds of king crabs.
The Associated Press reported that an American, a Russian and a German citizen were accused of being part of a company called Eastern Fish Resources.
It is alleged that the firm illegally gathered nearly 23,000 metric tons of king crab in 2006 and 2007.
A statement from the Russian interior ministry reportedly said this was over seven times the government quota allotted to the company.
The AP cited US news sources, which reported that a statement from Eastern Fish Resources said the firm had "always sought to operate in a legal and ethical manner".
It noted that Russian authorities are currently trying to curb the poaching of king crab, caviar and other "lucrative maritime products" from its eastern waters.
Earlier this month, the Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported that officials have stepped up efforts to curb poaching.
It claimed authorities had prosecuted a number of foreign-owned vessels for illegally fishing in Russian waters.
