Cull of kangaroos draws aboriginal protests
Fri 30 May 2008 15:25 UK — Australasia
A group of aboriginal people have been arrested after protesting against the cull of kangaroos in Canberra, Australia.
The eight activists attempted to claim the fenced off culling area as aboriginal land in a bid to stop the killing of the 400 eastern grey kangaroos.
However, they were all arrested last week for trespassing on a government site.
Each of the protesters have since been released and will appear in court next month. The four men and four women each face a maximum penalty of UAS$1,100.
Acting superintendent Erin Pobar said: "ACT (Australian Capital Territory) Policing supports the right to demonstrate but we ask protestors to do so peacefully and lawfully."
Isabell Coe, one of the protestors, said that they had attempted to reclaim the land in the same way as protestors had tried to take over a patch of land in 1972 outside the old parliament house.
She told the AFP news agency: "We tried to reclaim the land but we did it in order to try and save the kangaroos. That was the idea. We lit our sacred fire and we sat there waiting for the police to come."
