Concerns raised that Nepalese army members are involved in rhino poaching
Mon 19 May 2008 14:00 UK — Asia,Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos
Reports suggest that officials in Nepal are becoming increasingly concerned that army personnel could be involved in the poaching of rare rhinos in the area.
The local Press Trust of India reported that Nepal's army is partly responsible for protecting rare animals in the area.
However, at least eight one-horned Asian rhinos have been killed in the region in the past year and it is suspected that nine others are missing from a reserve.
Fears about army involvement were raised when Bardiya National Park officials arrested a serving army member and three run-away personnel earlier this month.
Minister for forest and soil conservation, Matrika Yadav, reportedly called for the army to allow a civilian investigation of the case.
He added that a high-level anti-poaching commission needed to be set up to curb the illegal trade.
Recently, it was reported that officials from the Indian state of Assam were considering making the penalties faced by rhino poachers more severe in a bid to prevent the killing of the rare animals.
