Birds increasingly threatened by climate change

Tue 20 May 2008 14:00 UK — Birds,Other

Picture for article A new report has warned that climate change is placing the survival of one in eight of the world's birds in jeopardy.

The new IUCN Red List of Threatened Species assessment for birds found that long-term drought and sudden extreme weather are putting stresses on many of the habitats that the world's rarest birds depend on.

It added that continued habitat destruction has also accelerated the rate at which birds are becoming extinct.

As a result, the IUCN now lists 1,226 species of bird as threatened. What's more, it has uplisted eight new birds to critically endangered.

"This latest update of the IUCN Red List shows that birds are under enormous pressure from climate change," commented Jane Smart, head of the IUCN's species programme.

"The IUCN Red List is the global standard when it comes to measuring species loss so we urge governments to take the information contained in it seriously and do their level best to protect the world's birds."

Some of the most threatened birds on the list include the Mallee emuwren, the Floreana mockingbird and the new Britain goshawk.
