Birds at risk from poaching in the Philippines

Wed 28 May 2008 14:00 UK — Asia,Birds

Picture for article Poachers are continuing to hunt rare birds in the Philippines, a local report has suggested.

The mindanews.com site has reported that the owner of a plot of land that has become home to nearly 10,000 rare birds has now said that poachers are continuing to target the area, despite the fact the birds are protected by law.

Rey Oliver Malana owns the two hectares of land that are used by a large number of black crowned night heron and cattle egrets.

He explained to the site that poaching was still rife and added: "I appeal to them to please stop the bird hunting activities. These egrets are going to the rice paddies and eat black bugs and worms. They are helping the farmers and not destructive to them."

According to the website, the birds are protected under the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. This aims to help maintain the country's fauna from illicit trade, abuse and destruction.

Local wildlife officer Jim Sampulna told the website that he would be launching an investigation to substantiate the poaching claims.

He added that he was set to ask ministers to "deputised personnel so they can go after the bird poachers".
