Cameroon looks to tackle elephant poaching
Mon 21 April 2008 14:00 UK — Africa,Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos
Officials in Cameroon have pledged to continue their attempts to tackle elephant poaching in the country.
The local Post newspaper reported that game rangers in an eastern province of the country recently arrested three men and confiscated 13 elephant tusks in a major raid.
According to the paper, the haul indicated that at least seven elephants had been killed and suggested to authorities that a major network of ivory traffickers was operating in the country.
One wildlife official, Pandong Eitel, explained to the paper that the availability of weapons from recent conflicts in the area was fuelling poaching.
"The circulation of war arms is boosting elephant poaching," he is reported to have said.
However, government officials stressed they were prepared to do whatever they could to curb the illegal killing of elephants.
"Poachers should understand we shall not give up the fight. We intend to see it through with the support of the forces of law and order and our partners," a ministry of defence spokesperson told the paper.
It is believed around 5,000 forest elephants survive in the area around Lobeke in the east of the country.
