Three lions killed in Kenya

Mon 17 March 2008 17:00 UK — Africa,Big Cats

Picture for article Three lions have been killed close to Kenya's Amboseli national park, officials have revealed.

Patrick Omondi of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) told Reuters that five suspects have already been arrested over the incident and added that the killings had raised concerns about the country's surviving population of the big cats.

Mr Omondi said that it was claimed that Maasai herdsmen had killed the lions because the animals had attacked their cattle.

"People purported that two lionesses had killed two cows," he told Reuters. However, he added that there was a suspicion that poachers could have been involved.

"Rangers were immediately deployed to the area, given that the skin and teeth of one of the lions was missing.

"It leads us to believe that illegal traders, using the Maasai morans (warriors), are involved in this."

Experts have previously warned that rapid population expansion in Kenya and across east Africa was having a serious impact on the population of lions.

Some have suggested that there are only 2,500 lions left in Kenya, down from over 10,000 in the 1970s.
