Thai officials arrest illegal animal traders

Wed 26 March 2008 13:45 UK — Asia,Marine Wildlife

Picture for article Officials in Thailand have arrested two vendors and seized more than 200 rare animals during a raid at Bangkok's popular weekend market.

The AFP news agency reported that police raided the market on Saturday (March 22nd) and made the arrests.

In total, more than two million baht (£32,000) worth of rare otters, slow lorises, birds and 21 endangered Madagascan tortoises were recovered from the Chatuchak Market.

Police colonel Thanayos Kengkasikit of Thailand's environmental crime division explained to the news agency: "Police are taking the suppression of endangered species smuggling very seriously."

He added that the man and women who were arrested would be charged with smuggling endangered species.

Conservationists have recently warned that Thailand has become a transportation centre for the illicit animal trade in south-east Asia.

The Madagascan tortoise is considered to be one of rarest land tortoises in the world. It is currently classed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Help IAR rescue and rehabilitate endangered wildlife.
