Dolphin helps save two stranded whales

Fri 14 March 2008 17:00 UK — Australasia,Marine Wildlife

Picture for article Conservationists have hailed a dolphin as a hero after it helped two stranded whales free themselves from shallow waters off the coast of New Zealand.

Reuters reported that the dolphin has been identified as Moko and that he is well-known to people living on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island.

According to the news agency, the dolphin saved the two pygmy whales by leading them to deep water after they had repeatedly stranded themselves on a sand bank.

Prior to Moko's arrival, the disoriented mother and calf had ignored attempts by humans to direct them out into deeper waters.

Local Department of Conservation officer Malcolm Smith explained to Reuters: "Quite clearly the attitude of the whales changed when the dolphin arrived on the scene. They responded virtually straight away.

"The dolphin managed in a couple of minutes what we had failed to do in an hour and a half.

"As far as I know it's the only documented instance of this happening."
