Dog attacker jailed for three months

Thu 20 March 2008 14:00 UK — Europe

Picture for article A man from Edinburgh who subjected a dog to a "cowardly and vicious attack" has been sentenced to three months in prison.

Martin McNaught was accompanied by his young son when he dragged the springer spaniel, known as Simba, along the ground, over a wall and stamped on its head in March 2007.

Witnesses told the Edinburgh Sheriff Court that Mr McNaught kicked the dog as if it were a football while walking it near the beach in Cramond.

Eyewitness Barbara Brewster said that people who were walking along the beach at the time of the attack screamed at the 29-year-old to leave the dog alone.

The mechanic denied the allegations and said that he had only given the dog "a shove" because he was running late for an interview.

However, he was found guilty and during sentencing yesterday (March 19th) sheriff Elizabeth Jarvie QC said it had been "a cowardly and vicious attack which caused the witnesses to be shocked and sickened".
