Pashmina goats face death and starvation

Fri 29 February 2008 13:35 UK — Asia,Domestic Animals

Picture for article Heavy snow has caused the deaths of hundreds of pashmina goats in a remote part of India, with thousands more facing starvation, local officials have revealed.

The authorities in the region of Ladakh claim to have seen "heaps" of goat carcasses in the wake of unexpected heavy snowfall which has frozen their traditional winter pastures, Reuters reported.

With winter stocks of fodder running out, local official Tsering Dorjay told the agency that the number of deaths was likely to increase further.

"The death toll could increase as the pregnant goats have been having miscarriages," he said. "The young ones have been dying because of the cold."

"The fodder has reached to some areas but 30,000 to 40,000 goats still face starvation in snow-bound areas."

There are thought to be roughly 150,000 pashmina goats in the region, which lies near to India's border with China.
