Grey wolves decision faces legal action
Thu 28 February 2008 13:10 UK — North America,Other
Last week's decision by US authorities to remove protected status from grey wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming has been met by the threat of legal action.
A coalition of 11 environmental groups advised the US Department of the Interior yesterday (February 27th) that they plan to sue to halt the removal of the northern Rockies wolf population from the endangered species list.
The groups have claimed that the wolves' population of 1,500 across the three states is too low to ensure their survival, especially if hunting of the animal is allowed later this year.
However, Sharon Rose, a spokeswoman for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, claimed that the decision to declassify the wolves was the result of a lengthy analysis of their status.
"Everybody took extra care to make sure that what we were doing was the right thing to do and that the population was actually ready to be de-listed," she told the Associated Press. "We believe the states will do a good job."
The wolves are currently set to lose their federal protection within the next month.
