New Jersey deer hunt causes controversy

Tue 29 January 2008 13:30 UK — North America,Ungulates

Picture for article A deer hunt set to begin today (January 29th) in the US state of New Jersey has attracted criticism from both local residents and conservationists.

The ten-day hunt aims to reduce the population of deer in the South Mountain Reservation, with proponents of the exercise declaring it necessary to curb the animals' impact on vegetation, adding that they pose a threat to motorists.

However, the critics of the cull, which aims to kill up to 150 deer, have argued that state estimates of the reservation's population of the animal are exaggerated.

Some have called for the use of non-lethal methods to control deer numbers, while resident Carol Rivelli told the Associated Press that she had concerns over the shooting taking place so near to a residential area.

"I live right next to the reservation, and safety and danger are my main concern," she explained.

Earlier this month, officials in the US state of Wisconsin revealed that they were considering whether or not to launch a summer cull of previously-endangered timber wolves.
