India establishes safe corridor for elephants

Fri 21 December 2007 13:15 UK — Asia,Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos

Picture for article A wildlife corridor offering safe passage between two Indian reserves for as many as 1,000 elephants has been secured.

The land, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, was bought by conservation groups and handed over to the region's Forest Department yesterday (December 20th).

Officials have highlighted the narrow strip of land as being vital to allowing the secure movement of elephants between the two reserves, with the areas cut off from each other by deforestation and agricultural land.

Welcoming the decision, elephant biologist Vivek Menon said: "One of the greatest threats facing Asian elephants today is the shrinking and fragmentation of their habitat.

"Securing these corridors is the only long-term solution for reducing the human-elephant conflict."

According to the BBC there are now 88 elephant corridors in India, with the country home to an estimated 25,000 of the animals.

Help IAR rescue and rehabilitate endangered wildlife.
