Asian countries unite to save the tiger

Thu 13 December 2007 13:45 UK — Asia,Big Cats

Picture for article Twelve Asian countries including India and China have united to produce a plan outlining their strategies for preserving the continent's tiger population.

The Action Tiger report was prepared by the seven-member inter-governmental Global Tiger Forum (GTF) and released earlier this week, Mathaba.net reported.

Issues dealt with in the plan include the disappearance of the tigers' habitat, poaching and the need to prevent the trade in tiger body parts.

"In the last 23 years, tigers have made a comeback and are on the assured path of recovery," claimed GTF Secretary General S C Dey.

"China is the only country where four of the five species of tiger are found, but pressures from poaching and habitat destruction have threatened their population," he told the website.

Figures published last week revealed that India's tiger population has fallen to fewer than 1,500, from over 3,600 in 2002.
